Heretic (2024): review

Heretic is a gripping, disturbing, and thoughtful experience. Directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, co-writers of A Quiet Place, it explores psychological horror through the darker recesses of human conviction.

The story begins quietly. Young Mormon missionaries Sister Barnes and Sister Paxton, played by Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East, go from door to door. Combining an innocent certainty with inner strength, they hope to spread their message. When they knock on Mr. Reed’s door, however, a claustrophobic drama begins. Hugh Grant’s initially charming host becomes a manipulative antagonist, drawing the women into a psychological game that pushes their faith and convictions to the limit.

Grant gives one of the strongest performances of his career. His charisma lets him move masterfully between apparent friendliness and threatening manipulation. Reed is both fascinating and repellent, a character who stays in the mind. Thatcher and East are equally convincing in nuanced, powerful performances. Their characters are more than victims: their strength and depth develop in ways that involve me emotionally.

Beck and Woods direct with subtle tension and a precise feeling for atmosphere. Reed’s labyrinthine house intensifies the sense of confinement. Cinematographer Chung Chung-hoon uses tight framing, dark lighting, and contrasts of light and shadow to give visual form to the psychological pressure.

The film also has considerable thematic substance. How far should conviction go? Where does faith become fanaticism? What happens when beliefs collide with a brutal reality? Those questions give Heretic an intellectual depth that lingers beyond the immediate horror.

It is not perfect. Some secondary strands feel unnecessary, and certain moments take more time than their contribution to the tension warrants. Those weaknesses nevertheless recede beside the emotional force and the exceptional performances.

Heretic is an intense, intelligently directed horror film whose acting, oppressive atmosphere, and thematic depth leave an impression. It is a highlight for viewers who enjoy psychological horror and demanding cinema.
