Terrifier 3 (2024): review

Terrifier 3 continues Art the Clown’s vicious saga against a Christmas backdrop. Damien Leone sends Art back into the lives of Sienna, played by Lauren LaVera, and her brother Jonathan, played by Elliott Fullam. Miles County’s winter festivities become a bloody battlefield. Dressed as Santa Claus, Art spreads terror at a frantic pace.

David Howard Thornton excels again as the silent killer, combining absurd humor with sadistic rage. His body language and facial expressions give Art a bizarre presence, simultaneously fascinating and repulsive. Thornton plays with expectations by pairing childish delight with ruthless violence. The Christmas encounters, including the bar scenes, make that contrast particularly effective.

The special effects and makeup are outstanding and central to the film’s macabre aesthetic. Leone’s practical effects pull the viewer directly into the grotesque action, creating something well beyond ordinary slasher violence. Christmas provides an unusual but effective setting, with the gore becoming a morbid form of seasonal decoration that fits the film’s ironic tone.

The story, however, has weaknesses. It can feel scattered and more interested in reaching the next kill sequence than developing the characters’ connections. Sienna’s trauma and her relationship with Jonathan are addressed, but often superficially, leaving some reactions to danger unconvincing. The running time of more than two hours amplifies the repetition and thin characterization. LaVera nevertheless remains a convincing counterweight to Art as the final girl resisting his seemingly unstoppable violence.

Terrifier 3 is a merciless, extremely brutal horror film that develops its predecessors’ grotesque formula. The characterization could be more nuanced, but the brilliantly executed effects and twisted humor compensate. For gore fans, it is a feast that puts Christmas in an entirely different light.
